Market Rasen


Market Rasen Racecourse sits on the northern edge of the town in Lincolnshire and is Britain's only year‑round National Hunt venue. Racing in the area began in the early 19th century, with meetings held on various temporary sites from 1828 until the course found a permanent home on Willingham Road in 1924. Four local landowners purchased fifty acres for the new track, later expanding it to create the layout that still exists today. Victor Lucas, who managed the course from 1945 to 1971, shaped much of its modern character, planning the paddock, parade ring, stands and weighing room, and expanding the fixture list from three meetings a year to twelve.

The course sits where the Brocklesby, Southwold and Burton Hunts historically met, and its early steeplechase identity is reflected in the original company name, Market Rasen United Hunts Steeplechases Ltd. It later became part of the Jockey Club portfolio, which has continued to invest in facilities and prize money.

Market Rasen is a right‑handed, undulating oval of about a mile and a quarter with tight bends, a short run‑in and eight easy fences per circuit. The terrain of the Lincolnshire Wolds gives the track more contour than many expect, rewarding nimble horses that travel well and jump accurately. Front‑runners often do well because the bends make it difficult for hold‑up horses to make ground.

It is best known as a summer jumping course, running its main programme from April to October, with the Summer Plate in July standing as its signature race and one of the most valuable summer National Hunt handicaps in Britain. The course now stages around twenty fixtures a year, maintaining a close, friendly atmosphere with racegoers positioned close to the action.
