Joanna Mason drew level with the late Terry Lucas on 131 winners for the Mick Easterby yard when she steered Trucial Pearl home in the final race at Ripon this afternoon, getting the better of the favourite Hatamoto by half a length. The win brought her alongside a record that had stood since 2005, when Lucas rode his final winner for the stable aboard We'll Meet Again. Terry Lucas rode his first winner on Wynburry back in April 1979 and his last came at Wolverhampton in June 2005 on We'll Meet Again. Terry rode for the stable over a 26 year spell and was a master tactician and a superb judge of a horse. He was simply known as 'God' to his boss!
Joanna's first winner for the yard came in August 2007 when she rode Lake Chini to victory at Carlisle, over two years after Lucas's final success. She remained an amateur until 2020, turning professional at the end of that year due to the limited opportunities open to ameteur riders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Joanna's first winner in the paid ranks for the stable came on Marwari at Newcastle on New Year's Eve 2020. Since then her progress has been steady and assured, establishing her as one of the most dependable and well‑liked riders in the north.
