Romstead was purchased as a yearling from Doncaster Sales in 1971 for 320gns. He made his debut at Newcastle in April 1972, and then was placed in his next four races. He won the 'Try Again Juvenile Maiden Stakes' under Eddie Hide at Pontefract in 1972, where he made all to beat Pam's Choice by two lengths. Romstead recorded one win for just six starts.
