Lago came from Ian Balding's stable. He had his first run for new connections at Southwell in 2001 and won at Beverley in 2002 over two miles. He also ran over hurdles and was brought down in a nasty incident at Market Rasen in 2001. Lago was sold to James Moffatt at Doncaster Sales in 2003. He went on to win over hurdles and fences.
