Over jumps, Newbury is one of the most respected courses in the country. The Ladbrokes Trophy—still thought of by many as the old Hennessy—is its centrepiece, a deep, searching handicap chase that has a long history of producing future Gold Cup horses. The fences are fair but stiff enough to demand accuracy, and the long straight rewards stamina and rhythm. Trainers use Newbury as a proving ground because it tells the truth about a horse’s ability; there’s nowhere to hide on a track this open.

The setting adds to its stature. The stands look out across a broad sweep of Berkshire countryside, and even on busy days the place feels spacious rather than cramped.
