Nottingham Racecourse sits in Colwick Park on the eastern edge of the city, close to the River Trent and about three kilometres from the city centre. It is a flat racing venue with two left‑handed tracks, one inside the other, each about a mile and a half round. The inner track, formerly the jumps course, is used in spring and autumn and has a five‑furlong straight; the outer track is used in summer and has a six‑furlong straight. The bends are generally easy but the home turn is sharp, and the course tends to suit well‑balanced horses rather than long‑striding types.
Racing in Nottingham dates back to the 1700s, originally on the Forest Recreation Ground. The present Colwick Park site opened in 1892 and became the permanent home of the sport in the city. Nottingham was a dual‑purpose course until 1996, when National Hunt racing ceased and the layout was reconfigured into two flat tracks. The venue has since built a reputation for introducing high‑class horses, with notable maiden winners including Slip Anchor, Oath and Oh So Sharp.
The racecourse runs a seasonal programme from spring through autumn, offering regular fixtures rather than relying on a single major festival. It is known for a straightforward layout, a long home straight that tests stamina, and an atmosphere that appeals to both experienced racegoers and newcomers. The Further Flight Stakes in April is one of its leading races, holding Listed status since 2003, alongside the Kilvington Fillies’ Stakes and the Nottinghamshire Oaks.
The setting is green and open thanks to its parkland surroundings, and race days typically feature multiple races across the afternoon or evening, with spectators able to follow the action easily from various viewing points.
