 Sedgefield Racecourse sits just south of the village of Sedgefield in County Durham and is one of the North East's long‑established National Hunt venues, with racing recorded there since at least 1732. It developed through the 18th and 19th centuries under the influence of the Ralph Lambton Hunt, later formalising its fixtures from 1846 and expanding to multiple meetings a year after the First World War.

The course is a left‑handed, undulating oval of about a mile and two furlongs with tight bends, a downhill section into the straight, and then a climb to the winning post after the last fence. This configuration favours handy, agile horses rather than long‑striding types, and the ground can become testing in winter because the track sits on an exposed plateau above the village.

Sedgefield has survived several periods when closure seemed likely, particularly in the 20th century, but investment from the late 1970s onward modernised facilities, adding new stands, hospitality areas and a state‑of‑the‑art weighing room in 1998. It is now owned by Arena Racing Company and typically stages around 15–20 fixtures a year, drawing a loyal local crowd from County Durham and Teesside.

Its most famous modern moment came in 2013 when AP McCoy rode his 4,000th career winner there on Mountain Tunes, cementing the course's place in racing history. The Durham National in October is its biggest annual race, while the Sedgefield Cup provides another longstanding highlight.
